BOOK: Early Mornings at the Laksa Cafe by Janet Tay
HOSTS : Su May & Sue Hwa
It was our first Meet at a member’s – co-host Sue Hwa ‘s residence.
12 of us attended a very cosy and insightful meeting. We shared many views on the book’s key theme of filial piety – do we follow and obey? Carrying on the family business or choose your own path? The book also evoked personal stories from a few ladies on parenting and family disputes.
Overall, they admire the local author’s work. The characters are well expressed in terms of personality and character. They are amazed by her indepth knowledge of laksa and Japanese food preparations.
On the other hand, they say the title of the book is too tepid. It does not reflect the dramatic plots, twists and turns. Also the pace is considered slow in the beginning but picked up significantly in the last one third.
Everyone enjoyed the warm fellowship and food. We missed the asam laksa but it was well compensated with Ipoh hor fun and rojak for lunch. This was followed by a delicious tea time break with pulut hitam bubur prepared by Sue Hwa plus other pastries.
